orchidstooctopiWhen most people think of the theater(or is it the theatre?) you rarely think of anything related to science.  Cambridge’s Central Square Theater not only delivers entertaining and thoughtful plays but they teach you something about science at the same time.  Their current performance, From Orchids to Octopi is no exception.  Well known local playwright Melinda Lopez was commissioned to write a play revolving around Charles Darwin and his evolutionary theories.

Lopez who also is a professor of writing at Boston University made the play into something of a love story with the lead character Emma going through the same process of investigating Darwin that Lopez herself had to go through.  The play was spotlighted in the Boston Globe recently and details  the process of how the play came to be.

We have written about the Central Square Theater before since it is a relatively new venue here in Cambridge.  They recently announced their schedule for the 2010-2011 season which runs from October to June.  You can still catch From  Orchids to Octopi until May 2nd.  It will be followed up with the final shows of the 2009-2010 season with The Lady with All The Answers from May 13th to June 20th.  The Lady with All the Answers is loosely based on the life of Ann Landers the advice columnist.

Tickets run at most $35 with discounted options for students and seniors.  They are also currently offering Dining Packages with RendezVous in Central Square and Craigie on Main though they offer a list of other options like The Middle East and Miracle of Science.  You can buy tickets online.
