Danehy Park in Cambridge Hosts Annual Family Day

Boooo, the Summer’s over but hopefully there is still some good weather left to enjoy the outdoors for those of us who may not be into skiing, skating or snowboarding.  Cambridge is again holding their annual Family Day at Danehy Park this Saturday from 11am to 4pm.  Danehy Park may seem off the beaten path for some of us in Cambridge but it is well worth the trip.

According to the City of Cambridge website:

Danehy Park is a 50-acre recreational facility built on the site of the former city landfill. The landfill was closed to active dumping in the early 1970s. The City subsequently reclaimed what would have been a wasteland, and turned it into a community resource.

This is huge amount of open space that Cantabrigians should be enjoying.  You can have barbecues there and even bike around the parks trails.  It also currently includes soccer fields, softball fields and a football field with plans to add tennis courts.  If you have not had a chance to visit Danehy Park Saturday’s Family Day is a great opportunity.  As usual besides all of the other activities free hot dogs and chips are available while supplies last.

Another Cambridge summer activity that will be coming to a close is the Sunday Memorial Drive closure that allows for biking, running and roller blading along the Charles River.  I was looking for information on Danehy Park and found a video highlighting the view of bike riding around the park.  This seems to be another good option for Cambridge bike riders.  I have included the video (courtesy of mackjay2 on youtube) which is a bit rough(lots of wind noise) but does give you a feel for how big the park actually is.
