Today Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced her candidacy for the US Senate.  Coakley who lives in Medford and was District Attorney for Middlesex County for 8 years is the first to throw her hat into the ring to replace Senator Ted Kennedy who passed away recently from brain cancer.  As District Attorney for Middlesex County Coakley was very visible and active in the Cambridge area.  She is also married to retired Cambridge Police officer Thomas O’Connor Jr.

I was wondering whether she would make her candidacy official before Joe Kennedy’s decision to run or not.  I am glad that she announced it before.  It made me think of the phrase “history favors the bold”.  Yes “everyone” wants to have a Kennedy in office and Joe’s name may be enough to get him the seat but is that really how we want to decide who our next Senator is going to be.  With all do respect to the late Senator Kennedy, the decision should be based on who the right candidate is regardless of their name.  These difficult times require involvement by anyone and everyone who feel they can contribute.

Hats off to Martha Coakley for being bold and stepping out of the sidelines and into the race.  Any other bold candidates out there?
